Photographers of note are Kiana Hyeri who offers her perspective on the internal and external lives of Iranian youth and former doctor turned photographer Zun Lee whose B&W series of African-American fathers seeks to counter the dominant image of them as absent parents.
Art21 Blog Post: The Tenth Day of Mourning
British/Mexican photographer Alinka Echeverría shows pictures from her recent trip to South Africa, marking the occasion of South African president Nelson Mandela’s burial. Documenting a country in mourning, Echeverría’s photographs show “a deep sadness in the knowledge that South Africa will not see a man quite like him again, despite how much she yearns for him.”
Happy Birthday To A Beautiful Woman
Photographer and painter Mickalene Thomas’ 24-minute film which premiered in 2013 during her solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, had it’s official television debut this week on HBO. The documentary short pays tribute to the artist’s mother who is also her muse. If you missed the premiere, the film is now available for viewing on HBOGO.
Deborah Willis Wins NAACP Image Award in Literature
The 45th Annual NAACP Award winners were announced this week and amongst the winners was photographer and chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, Deborah Willis, P.h.D. Willis and her colleague Barbara Krauthemer won in the Non-fiction award category for the book “Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery” published by Temple University Press; First Edition edition (December 5, 2012).
