Many of us have issues with the Bloomberg administration, but I must tip my hat off to the Mayor for supporting this public education campaign designed to help boost the self esteem of girls ages 7 – 12 in this city.
Consider this alarming statistic: Over 80 percent of 10-year-old girls are afraid of being fat. Sad, but true. You can find more statistics here and read about the general, unhappy mental state of young girls as a results of the pressures (and often not-so-subliminal messages) they get from the media to look a certain way.
I would love to see this campaign throughout the country (and worldwide), but it’s great to know that NYC is taking the first step in positively encouraging young girls to see themselves as perfectly fine and beautiful, just the way they are.
In conjunction with this media campaign, there’s a PSA video and a girls’ self-esteem curriculum that will be rolling out to 200 after-school programs in the city this fall, among other activities. Check out the nyc.gov website for more information on the NYC Girl’s Project.
