Brutedge Gallery / Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ

A mixed-media group show of Haitian and Cuban artists featuring works of a spiritual and/or religious nature. Jorge Alberto Perez’ photographic work [pictured above] of appropriated image-fragments highlights the Yoruba legend of Moremi, a Christ-like figure who saved her tribe by letting herself be caught by the enemy in order to learn their secrets and save her own people. The story hinges on the ‘trick’ she plays and is dedicated to the trickster deity of Santeria – Elegua.

The first Prize is 2,000 euros in cash and an individual exhibition in a Gallery in Madrid, during PHotoEspaña 2014. Another good thing: the Jury: Alejandro Castellote (Curator), Chema Madoz (Artist), and María José Magaña (Instituto Cervantes), among others. The only hook: an inscription fee of 25 € ($34.00). 

Exhibition: When Congo Went to Hell

Autograph ABP presents a rarely seen archive dating from 1904, created by English missionary Alice Seeley Harris in the Congo Free State. These pioneering photographs publicly exposed the violent consequences of human rights abuses at the turn of the century, and are exhibited alongside newly commissioned work from acclaimed contemporary Congolese artist Sammy Baloji.
