We’re all students of photography to some extent but there’s something about the “eye” of youth that is often so powerfully raw and unfiltered.

There’s much potential in these young students and yet without support their dreams of becoming a photographer often go deferred.

With this new interview series I hope to give student photographers a platform for showing their work where they can get constructive feedback from our community of readers and maybe even be exposed to new opportunities.

Brent is the son of a long-time family friend yet the inspiration to put him as the first of Dodge & Burn‘s student photographer interviews goes way beyond nepotism. Strangely enough we’ve never met but I feel like I know him through his photographs. I look forward to watching him mature through his future work.

Where are you from?
Atlanta, GA

What school do you currently attend?
I was a senior at Chattahoochee High School. I”m currently applying to art schools for college.

What cameras and/or techniques do you use?
I shoot with a Vivitar 38000n 35mm and lately have been messing with some digital media also.

Who are your mentors or favorite photographers?
Lately I’ve been really into Jeff Wall and Anastasia Cazabon.

Why do you choose photography versus any other art form? What inspires you to shoot?
I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of capturing a point in time. I use photography as a means of self expression.

I’d say that my biggest inspiration would be those mediocre, overlooked moments of beauty that surround us every day.

Do you intend to pursue a career in photography?
Yes, definitely.

What’s your dream photography project?
I just want to shoot individuals other than my peers and people outside of my age group.

If you could ask a pro photographer for advice, what would it be?
I’d just ask technical questions in regards to shutter speeds, lighting methods and other ways to engage with people and places that I’m shooting.

If your photographs were a song, which would they be?
I don’t know, maybe a Barry White song.
