Carrie Mae Weems Wins 2013 MacArthur Genius Grant

2013 MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems

Following a tweet from @pedrovelez, I was pleasantly surprised today to find out that photographer and video installation artist Carrie Mae Weems was among the 2013 MacArthur Fellows. Known most notably for her “Kitchen Table Series“, Weems’ work examines the complexities of (African) American identity, class, and culture.

The only visual artist among this years fellows, Weems is among the 24 “exceptionally creative individuals” who were “selected through a rigorous process involving thousands of expert and anonymous nominators, evaluators, and selectors. The Foundation does not accept unsolicited or outside nominations.”

If you’re not familiar with Weem’s work, you’re missing out on one of the most important contributors to postmodernist photography. Several photographers I’ve interviewed on this blog have mentioned her as an artist who inspires them.

An artist of eloquence, poise and unique character, Weems is also an inspiring speaker. Check out Weems’ Art21 episode and her 2010 ICP lecture.

Congratulations Carrie Mae Weems!
